SHI 0418 - It's a Real Animal House
Thursday Dec 05, 2019
Thursday Dec 05, 2019
College students and pets... that's not always the best mix. However, in recent years more & more off-campus properties are becoming pet friendly as they find ways to be more competitive. Additionally with the confusion over assistance animals, this topic just becomes more frustrating for property managers and on-campus housing administrators.
In this episode we bring in the experts to get some clarity and discuss services that can be used to take the burden off of housing professionals and place accountability on tenants and students. Wes sits down with John Bradford, founder of PetScreening.com and J. Retinger from BioPet Laboratories to talk about legislation around pets and assistance animals as well best practices for managing a pet friendly community.

SHI 0416 - Rearview Mirrors & Windshields
Monday Nov 11, 2019
Monday Nov 11, 2019
So we are starting to close out 2019 as we are in the last 7 weeks or so of the year. Here at SHI we’ve already done a lot of reflection this past year and we’re now planning out 2020.
You know, in Student Housing and working within the academic calendar you really never get a good chance to do that. It has to happen while you’re either finishing out a leasing season or starting a new one. So at our last 2 regional summits in Waco and Charlotte we put a panel together, just to talk about what everyone learned in 2019 and how we planned on altering things for the 2020 lease-up cycle.
We called the session, Rearview Mirrors and Windshields.
In this episode we replay the panel from our Southeast Summit in Charlotte with was moderated by Kevin Sealy, President at Valeo Student. The panelist included:
Ashlei Elise, Regional Leasing & Marketing Manager for Landmark
Nayshan Cook, CEO at Resident Reach
Sam Winn, Director at AgencyFifty3
So these guys are not only seeing things at the ground level at the leasing offices and on campus, but they are also seeing it from a social media engagement and digital spend perspective as well. This is one you are going to want to take notes on and make sure you pick up on the things that surprised them this past year and how they are adjusting.

SHI 0413 - Mental Health & Campus Resources
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
Wednesday Oct 16, 2019
Mental health and college students is always a big topic. The majority of the student population are at an age when they are dealing with new pressures and experiences that can manifest or bring mental health issues to the surface. However there seems to be a huge gap in knowledge by off-campus housing professionals on how to identify these issues and understand the resources available to students to provide assistance. In this episode we talk with Dr. Kirk Dougher, AVC for Student Support and Wellness at Washington University in St Louis, to provide some insight on what types of signs to look for when a student may be dealing with a mental health issue and the support that the student and the off-campus housing provider can utilize.

SHI 0410 - Student Housing & Short Term Rental Market
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Tuesday Aug 27, 2019
Summer Turn is over and you're figuring out who is not showing up and how many completely vacant units you have. Having completely vacant apartments will help you control costs compared to partially occupied apartments, but they also allow you an opportunity to generate additional income if you look at using them as a short-term rental. Be it housing for visiting professors or listing the apartments on sites like AirBnB, their are some great alternative to help overcome the negative economic impact your vacancy is making on your income statement. In this episode we talk about these alternatives and sit down with Mickey Kropf, CEO of Vector Travel, and talk about why it is important to consider partnering with a company like his to handle your short term rental program.
This episode is sponsored by Unilodgers! To get your property in front of more international students, list your property today by visiting www.Unilodgers.com/contact-us

Behind the Biz with uForis
Monday Aug 19, 2019
Monday Aug 19, 2019
Gen Z doesn’t know a world without the Playstation in it. The oldest Gen Z’ers have been taking pictures with iPhone since they were 10. Pencil renderings certainly doesn’t spark their imagination and photos and videos from a “similar property” that was built somewhere else evokes questions about what their community will and won’t have.
So it seems only natural that as operators, we now are looking to virtual reality to create that connection with prospects. Regardless if you are developing a property or currently operating a student property, VR is increasingly becoming a necessary sales tool for your website.
One of the companies that is creating VR tours for student housing is uForis based in Vancouver, Canada. Why is Vancouver important? Because that’s where EA Sports’ largest developer studio is located. We’re talking about game developers that created games like FIFA Soccer and Madden Football. uForis was founded by these same developers from EA Sports. So as you can imagine… their commitment to quality is deep.
Recently I sat down with 2 of the Founders from uForis, Dora Cheng and David Li to talk to them about why they chose to move from the gaming industry to create VR renderings of Real Estate and their journey into student housing.
For more information, go to ww.uForis.com or contact David Li at david@uforis.com.
