After the Super Bowl Episode - SHI903
Wednesday Feb 21, 2024
Wednesday Feb 21, 2024
One thing is for certain, this year's NFL season and the Super Bowl was unlike any year before. Love her or hate her, Taylor Swift illustrated how her influence could breathe new life into an organization that has been under a lot of heat in recent years.
But how does that relate to Student Housing? It doesn't... but we did find a way to tie the discussion into the use of NIL and micro-influencers to promote a PBSH community.
In this episode, Wes and Gretta provide their take-a-ways from the Super Bowl, the half-time show, and the impact of the Swift/Kelce romance. As they tie it all to NIL, they include a recent ShopTalk conversation on NIL and micro-influencers with Alex Abernathy of Asset Living, Matt Pavlick with Gro Marketing, and Sam Winn with Agency FIFTY3.
We're not sure you'll learn anything from this episode but we hope you'll join in the drinking game we created!

Creating Community & Experience During a Pandemic SHI0508
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Creating programming and developing experiences to help foster a sense of community is essential to the success of a university as well as any off-campus student properties. That task was tough in a pre-COVID world. Both university res-life departments and off-campus managers are now trying to figure out what those experiences will look like this fall while the virus is still prevalent. Things as simple as a pizza party now must take into consideration 100 other issues related to sanitization and reducing the spread of germs. In this episode, we sit down with folks who have been tasked with developing those experiences while understanding public health guidelines. The purpose is to help others who are tasked with the same responsibility who may need some idea to spark their own creativity and to outline points that need to be considered.
Panelists:
- Dr. Jamie Panven, Assistant VP of Student Success & Resident Retention - Radford University
- Adam Yarber, Director of Resident Experience - Campus Advantage
- Shari Bethea, Regional Leasing Specialist - Varsity Campus

SHI 0418 - The Power of Storytelling
Monday Dec 16, 2019
Monday Dec 16, 2019
There is a lot of research done on how storytelling helps people remember facts easier. When that story also evokes emotion, that emotion leads to a decision.
In student housing, we are trying to get prospects, tenants, and employees to make decisions all the time. But how many of us are using story telling on our leasing tour, or in a roommate mediation, or in our employee training?
In this episode Wes sits down with the host of the Storytelling 2.0 podcast and the new Head of People & Culture at Cardinal Group Management, Peter Lynch, to talk about how we can harness the power of storytelling to make sure your property is memorable to your prospects and to provide real impact to the people you lead. We also listen to an audio clip from our Southwest Regional Summit where we sit down with the true professionals of storytelling, the leadership team at Waco Tours, to discuss how telling the stories of their little city has turned into a thriving business.

SHI 0416 - Rearview Mirrors & Windshields
Monday Nov 11, 2019
Monday Nov 11, 2019
So we are starting to close out 2019 as we are in the last 7 weeks or so of the year. Here at SHI we’ve already done a lot of reflection this past year and we’re now planning out 2020.
You know, in Student Housing and working within the academic calendar you really never get a good chance to do that. It has to happen while you’re either finishing out a leasing season or starting a new one. So at our last 2 regional summits in Waco and Charlotte we put a panel together, just to talk about what everyone learned in 2019 and how we planned on altering things for the 2020 lease-up cycle.
We called the session, Rearview Mirrors and Windshields.
In this episode we replay the panel from our Southeast Summit in Charlotte with was moderated by Kevin Sealy, President at Valeo Student. The panelist included:
Ashlei Elise, Regional Leasing & Marketing Manager for Landmark
Nayshan Cook, CEO at Resident Reach
Sam Winn, Director at AgencyFifty3
So these guys are not only seeing things at the ground level at the leasing offices and on campus, but they are also seeing it from a social media engagement and digital spend perspective as well. This is one you are going to want to take notes on and make sure you pick up on the things that surprised them this past year and how they are adjusting.

Behind the Biz with uForis
Monday Aug 19, 2019
Monday Aug 19, 2019
Gen Z doesn’t know a world without the Playstation in it. The oldest Gen Z’ers have been taking pictures with iPhone since they were 10. Pencil renderings certainly doesn’t spark their imagination and photos and videos from a “similar property” that was built somewhere else evokes questions about what their community will and won’t have.
So it seems only natural that as operators, we now are looking to virtual reality to create that connection with prospects. Regardless if you are developing a property or currently operating a student property, VR is increasingly becoming a necessary sales tool for your website.
One of the companies that is creating VR tours for student housing is uForis based in Vancouver, Canada. Why is Vancouver important? Because that’s where EA Sports’ largest developer studio is located. We’re talking about game developers that created games like FIFA Soccer and Madden Football. uForis was founded by these same developers from EA Sports. So as you can imagine… their commitment to quality is deep.
Recently I sat down with 2 of the Founders from uForis, Dora Cheng and David Li to talk to them about why they chose to move from the gaming industry to create VR renderings of Real Estate and their journey into student housing.
